She may be from Cortland, a small town in upstate New York, but with 30+ years of experience in the field of travel, it could certainly be said that Lizzy McCartney is a citizen of the world. Lizzy giggles when she tells friends that she did everything backwards. “I got married shortly after graduating high school, had four children by the time I was 26, waited on tables for years and THEN decided it was time to go to college.” In time, Lizzy earned degrees in Travel & Tourism, Geography and Spanish. In 1984 she began her travel career as a travel agent. Ten years later Lizzy assumed the position of Assistant Director of International Programs at the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Cortland. Following her tenure with SUNY, Lizzy served as the study abroad marketing representative in the USA for the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia. All the while, however, Lizzy continued to plan trips for family and friends because helping others discover the miracle of travel is her greatest passion. In 2013 Lizzy returned to her roots as a travel agent and in 2015 she founded Travel With Lizzy, LLC.
The I.N.D.Y. Travel Society for Women has been a dream of Lizzy’s for many years. “The Society’s inaugural trip proved that anyone can do anything with a little patience, perseverance and willingness to bend a little,” says Lizzy. “You also have to have an absolute belief in what you are trying to accomplish.” I still look forward to discovering the world and to traveling with women who love to travel as much as I do, no matter what life has thrown their way. I may be getting older but I’m not dead yet. Far from it.
It is that passion, that zest for life that lends itself to the name of our Society. That’s what the acronym I.N.D.Y. represents : I’m Not Dead Yet!
